Your flight compensation questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers about delays, cancellations, your rights and potential compensation.

When can I claim for a delayed flight?

Under UK261, a delay of at least three hours at your final destination may qualify if the airline was responsible. The airline, route and cause of the delay matter. Use our free flight check to review your circumstances.

How much flight compensation could I receive?

Under UK261 the standard bands are £220, £350 and £520 per passenger, depending on distance. For long-haul arrival delays of between three and four hours, £260 may apply. Your actual entitlement depends on the circumstances.

Can I claim compensation if my flight was cancelled?

Possibly. The notice you received, alternative travel offered and reason for cancellation all matter. You may also have rights to a refund, rerouting, meals or accommodation.

What are extraordinary circumstances?

Extraordinary circumstances can include severe weather or air traffic control restrictions beyond an airline’s control. Compensation might not be payable, although assistance or refund rights can still apply.

What do I need to check my flight?

You will usually need your flight number, date and route. Keep your booking confirmation, boarding pass and messages from the airline as evidence.

Can I claim for more than one passenger?

Yes. Each eligible passenger may have a separate entitlement, even when travelling together on the same booking.

How long do I have to make a claim?

Time limits vary depending on the applicable jurisdiction. In England and Wales, many UK261 compensation claims have a six-year limitation period; different rules may apply in Scotland and elsewhere. Do not delay gathering your documents.
